OVERVIEW
This full-day active excursion combines land travel, boat navigation, and hiking to explore one of the most remote and breathtaking corners of Tierra del Fuego. Departing from Ushuaia, you’ll visit Estancia Harberton, sail through the Beagle Channel, spot penguins at Martillo Island, and hike across the wild and untouched Gable Island — all in one unforgettable day.
ITINERARY
The adventure begins with hotel pick-up in Ushuaia and a drive east along National Route 3 and Route J. Upon arrival at Estancia Harberton, you’ll visit the Marine Mammal Museum and tour the grounds of one of Tierra del Fuego’s earliest European settlements.
From there, board a motorized zodiac boat and sail toward Martillo Island, where you’ll observe penguins in their natural breeding habitat — a charming and unforgettable sight.
The journey continues to the majestic Gable Island, your main destination of the day. After disembarking, enjoy a delicious lunch paired with Patagonian red wine, soft drinks, and mineral water.
Once lunch and coffee are served, set out on a guided hike across this untouched island, where relics of the Yámana people and early settlers still remain. Surrounded by wind, birdsong, and endless scenery, you’ll feel like you’ve reached the edge of the world.
After roughly two hours of walking, return by boat to Puerto Harberton, where your bus will be waiting to take you back to Ushuaia.

Is the walk on Isla Gable difficult?
There are two trail options: one moderate, and one moderate-to-low intensity. Both are suitable for travelers in good health with proper footwear.
Is the penguin colony visited on foot?
No, the penguin colony is observed from the zodiac boat. Walking among penguins is only available as an extra in private tours.
What should I wear?
Trekking shoes, a waterproof jacket, and warm clothing are recommended.
