Enjoy an afternoon trekking to the breathtaking Esmeralda Lagoon
Trekking to Laguna Esmeralda invites nature lovers on a scenic adventure through the untouched landscapes of Tierra del Fuego. Departing from Ushuaia, the journey begins with a drive to the trailhead, followed by a hike through lush lenga forests, peat bogs, and crystal-clear streams. The trail is surrounded by breathtaking views of snow-dusted peaks and offers chances to spot local wildlife such as foxes and native birds. The highlight is the arrival at the stunning Esmeralda Lagoon—its striking emerald waters set against a backdrop of rugged mountains create an unforgettable sight. After enjoying time at the lagoon, the return hike retraces the scenic route back to Ushuaia, leaving visitors with lasting memories of Patagonia’s wild beauty.
The austral summer blesses us with extended daylight, creating the perfect setting to experience Fuegian nature and enjoy a relaxed dinner under the lingering hues of sunset.
This afternoon trekking tour to Esmeralda Lagoon is designed for those who love walking and being immersed in the outdoors. It’s an excellent chance to witness the lagoon’s striking color and the mountains lit by evening light.
The excursion departs from our office at Roca 136 around 2:30 PM, with a transfer to Tierra Mayor Valley—the starting point of a moderate hike. The trail’s difficulty mainly comes from uneven terrain rather than elevation, with a gentle slope most of the way. Near the lagoon, there’s a short steeper section. The path winds through forest and peat bogs, which can be quite wet, and if needed, the guide will provide rain boots for swampy sections. Suitable footwear is highly recommended.
Laguna Esmeralda lies at the base of the Ojo de Albino glacier, cradled by Cerro Bonete and Cordón Toribio. Its vivid emerald hue contrasts with the red of the peat bog, earthy mountain tones, and the bright white of the glacier—offering a truly unique visual palette.
On the way back, we’ll continue through the forest, passing streams and rivers, before arriving at a cozy mountain cabin to enjoy a well-earned dinner: assorted snacks, a hearty lentil stew, and a Patagonian red wine, all paired with sweeping views of Tierra Mayor Valley. It’s the perfect spot to take in the magic of the setting sun. Return to Ushuaia is estimated around 10:00 PM.
