Rising dramatically from a rocky islet in the Beagle Channel, the Les Éclaireurs Lighthouse is one of Ushuaia’s most iconic landmarks. Often called the “Lighthouse at the End of the World,” this picturesque beacon stands as a silent witness to the wild and remote beauty of Tierra del Fuego. While that nickname is more accurately attributed to the now-defunct San Juan de Salvamento lighthouse on Isla de los Estados, Les Éclaireurs has captured the popular imagination for its striking location and timeless presence.

A Beacon in the Beagle Channel

Les Éclaireurs—French for “The Scouts”—refers to a group of small islets scattered a few kilometers off the coast of Ushuaia. On one of these sits the cylindrical red-and-white lighthouse, built in 1920 and still in operation today. Standing 11 meters high and reaching a visibility of 7 nautical miles, the lighthouse is fully automated and operated by the Argentine Navy. Although no longer manned, it continues to guide vessels navigating the often-turbulent waters of the Beagle Channel.

Its remote position and the dramatic landscapes that surround it—jagged rocks, icy waters, and snow-capped mountains—have made it a favorite subject for photographers and a must-see stop on boat excursions departing from Ushuaia’s port.

Maritime History and Myth

Though Les Éclaireurs is frequently associated with Jules Verne’s novel The Lighthouse at the End of the World, the actual location described in the book lies farther east. Still, the lighthouse embodies the same sense of isolation and resilience that Verne depicted. It has become a symbol not only of Ushuaia’s maritime heritage but also of mankind’s perseverance in the face of nature’s extremes.

A notable moment in its history occurred in 1930, when a ship named the Monte Cervantes, carrying hundreds of passengers, struck submerged rocks near the islets. While all passengers were rescued, the ship’s captain tragically perished. The event became one of the region’s most famous maritime accidents and reinforced the lighthouse’s role as a critical navigational aid.

Visiting the Lighthouse

While visitors cannot disembark on the islet where the lighthouse stands, numerous boat tours and catamaran cruises offer up-close views. These excursions typically include wildlife watching—seals, cormorants, and sometimes even penguins—as well as breathtaking scenery of the surrounding fjords and mountains.
